QUICK POST: I hope folks are not sick of shorebirds – I am obsessed with them. I made it out to Liberty Loop back pond at the Wallkill River National Wildlife Refuge tonight looking for shorebirds. I entered from the south via Owens Station Road, so I did not check the west side of the loop for shorebirds. The shorebird highlight of the afternoon was getting a pretty good look at one of the 5 Wilson’s Snipe that I had for the day. Here’s my list:
Killdeer 15
Lesser Yellowlegs 1
Solitary Sandpiper 1
Least Sandpiper 40
Pectoral Sandpiper 7
Wilson’s Snipe 5
You’re not alone when it comes to the shorebirds! I too am obsessed with them. I only wish we were getting more!
You’re not kidding John! It’s killing me, but I’m trying to remain optimistic. Hopefully there are some good ones in the near future! Matt
Matt
I’m not sick of them. I’m just getting to see some. I’m so confused by their coloring even with the big sibley’s book. I just bought a new bird book that has photographs instead of paintings so I am hoping it will be better, but not so sure of that yet.
I went to Milford Point in Conn. last week and got 6 lifers out of the trip!!
Wilma
Congrats on the lifers Wilma! I actually prefer bird guides with photos, specifically the Crossley Guide for IDing birds. Shorebirds are a challenge, that’s for sure (shore?)!
Matt
Thanks for the posts here Matt!! I have to get my car serviced tomorrow and my mechanic is within walking distance of the citgo pond. It will give me a shot at looking for some of these birds instead of sitting in his reception room for a couple of hours!
Scotty
You’re welcome Scotty! If you have time check the Heritage Trail side as well as there have been plenty of shorebirds and good conditions there. Matt
I like the light in the Lesser Yellowlegs picture. I’ve looked at this post two different days and have been struck by this shot each time. It’s a favorite!!
Awesome to hear, thanks Karen! Matt
