Orange County EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVE, 06/24/21

This evening I went to Newburgh to try again for the Eurasian Collared-Dove that has been reported there (I tried last Saturday with no luck). The bird has been reported at the tennis courts on Lilly Street, and when I arrived there was another birder there – I’m drawing a blank, but I believe his name was Paul. He had seen the bird already, but was lingering for another look at it. And I’m glad he did because he was able to relocate the bird about a block away. He actually came and got me on it – huge thanks. It’s a beautiful bird and a New York State bird for me; I’m glad I was able to catch up with it this time.

  1. I knew that you were award of it’s presence due to an earlier posting when you looked but didn’t see it. I was very happy that you finally got it. It took me three times but it was well worth it. I was a bit surprised when Tom Burke said that it was a State bird for him also. That, of course, was very nice but adding it to the Orange County list is all the sweeter!
    CONGRATULATIONS!

    1. If you are going to get a NY state bird, what better county to get it in than Orange? I was happy and lucky to have gotten the bird tonight. It’s quite a good looking bird too. Matt

  2. Glad you got the dove. Do not have it for N.J Had it here in Florida this week as expected as well as common ground dove. Birding here has been a mixed bag. Water levels in some areas have been way down. ESP wanted to get the snail kite but missed it on two tries. Also missed out on snowy and Wilson’s plovers. In the Everglades about 12 swallow tailed kites put on a fantastic display. Will send pictures when I get home.

    1. Sounds pretty good Bruce; I”ll look forward to the pics. Unfortunately it’s been determined that the dove is an African Collared-Dove, so that happened this morning. Matt
