Here are my final counts for 2012:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>World: 199 Species<\/li>\n<li>United States: 171 Species<\/li>\n<li>New York State: 167 Species<\/li>\n<li>New Jersey State: 85 Species<\/li>\n<li>Orange County, NY: 126 Species<\/li>\n<li>Sullivan County, NY: 112 Species<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Favorite Bird of the Year: American Bittern At the Basha Kill:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/orangebirding.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/MG_6626.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-812\" title=\"_MG_6626\" src=\"https:\/\/orangebirding.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/MG_6626-1024x736.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"584\" height=\"419\" srcset=\"https:\/\/orangebirding.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/MG_6626-1024x736.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/orangebirding.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/MG_6626-300x215.jpg 300w, https:\/\/orangebirding.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/MG_6626-417x300.jpg 417w, https:\/\/orangebirding.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/MG_6626.jpg 1207w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 584px) 85vw, 584px\" \/><\/a>I picked the American Bittern as my favorite bird of the year mostly because this is a bird that I was not very confident I would ever get a chance to see (much like the Least Bittern now!). I have for a long time been fascinated by this bird, and to finally get to see one and also get to take some photographs was really a special treat.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Favorite Photograph of the Year: Black-crowned Night Heron at Denning&#8217;s Point:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/orangebirding.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/MG_4245.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-813\" title=\"_MG_4245\" src=\"https:\/\/orangebirding.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/MG_4245-1024x731.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"584\" height=\"416\" srcset=\"https:\/\/orangebirding.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/MG_4245-1024x731.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/orangebirding.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/MG_4245-300x214.jpg 300w, https:\/\/orangebirding.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/MG_4245.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 584px) 85vw, 584px\" \/><\/a>This is another case of finally getting to see a bird that I really wasn&#8217;t convinced I&#8217;d ever get a good look at, not to mention a decent photograph. Finding this bird out in the early afternoon was very fortunate for me indeed. The final result is a photograph that I think about often.\u00a0 I&#8217;m not sure it&#8217;s my best shot of the year, but it is definitely my favorite. Honorable mention goes to the <strong>Short-eared Owl<\/strong> shot I got just last week at the Shawangunk Grasslands. Again, this is a bird I did not see myself getting a good photo of any time soon:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/orangebirding.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/MG_2299.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-814\" title=\"_MG_2299\" src=\"https:\/\/orangebirding.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/MG_2299-300x214.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"214\" srcset=\"https:\/\/orangebirding.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/MG_2299-300x214.jpg 300w, https:\/\/orangebirding.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/MG_2299-1024x731.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/orangebirding.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/MG_2299-420x300.jpg 420w, https:\/\/orangebirding.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/MG_2299.jpg 1402w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 85vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Favorite Birding Location of the Year: The Cliffs Of Moher, Ireland:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/orangebirding.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/MG_5802.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-815\" title=\"_MG_5802\" src=\"https:\/\/orangebirding.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/MG_5802-1024x682.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"584\" height=\"388\" srcset=\"https:\/\/orangebirding.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/MG_5802-1024x682.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/orangebirding.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/MG_5802-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/orangebirding.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/MG_5802-450x300.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 584px) 85vw, 584px\" \/><\/a>Taking a small boat tour along the Cliffs of Moher in Ireland was an amazing experience. It&#8217;s not every day you get to see Northern Fulmars, Black-legged Kittiwakes, Common Murres, Razorbills, and of course Atlantic Puffins. It was an amazing day of birding!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/orangebirding.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/MG_5844.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-816\" title=\"_MG_5844\" src=\"https:\/\/orangebirding.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/MG_5844-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/orangebirding.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/MG_5844-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/orangebirding.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/MG_5844-1024x769.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/orangebirding.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/MG_5844-399x300.jpg 399w, https:\/\/orangebirding.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/MG_5844.jpg 1556w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 85vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Honorable mention goes to the<strong> Liberty Loop at Wallkill River NWR.<\/strong> This is the location that I think I went to the most frequently last year &#8211; I always felt that it offered a good look at a wide variety of bird species.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Most Exciting Birding Experience: Great Horned Owl at Linear Park:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/orangebirding.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/MG_0546.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-817\" title=\"_MG_0546\" src=\"https:\/\/orangebirding.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/MG_0546.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"742\" height=\"927\" srcset=\"https:\/\/orangebirding.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/MG_0546.jpg 742w, https:\/\/orangebirding.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/MG_0546-240x300.jpg 240w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 984px) 61vw, (max-width: 1362px) 45vw, 600px\" \/><\/a>I think this was my most exciting birding experience of the year for two reasons. The first is obvious&#8230;It&#8217;s a GREAT HORNED OWL &#8211; what an incredible bird! The second reason is that Tricia, Karen, and I went out to Linear Park with no real expectations and no prior knowledge of the possibility of finding a Great Horned Owl there. So, to be out there and to find this owl was shocking and exciting.<\/p>\n<p>Well, here&#8217;s hoping that 2013 brings as many (hopefully more!) awesome birding experiences.
