It was a nice stop and I had 7 species of waterfowl:<\/p>\n<p>Canada Goose (3)<br \/>\nMallard (5)<br \/>\nCanvasback (27)<br \/>\nBufflehead (5)<br \/>\nCommon Goldeneye (2)<br \/>\nCommon Merganser (1)<br \/>\nRuddy Duck (43)<\/p>\n<p>The Common Goldeneyes stole the show for me; I got great looks at one bird that spent some time close to the pier. I have this as a first winter male, Piermont Pier 01\/28\/17.~<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6717\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6717\" style=\"width: 840px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/orangebirding.com\/?attachment_id=6717\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-6717\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-6717\" src=\"https:\/\/orangebirding.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/IMG_2012-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"840\" height=\"630\" srcset=\"https:\/\/orangebirding.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/IMG_2012-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/orangebirding.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/IMG_2012-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/orangebirding.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/IMG_2012-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/orangebirding.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/IMG_2012-1200x900.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 1362px) 62vw, 840px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6717\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">~COGO in flight at Piermont Pier, 01\/28\/17.~<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I left Piermont Pier and headed to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.njpalisades.org\">State Line Lookout <\/a>to join the hordes of birders\/photographers\/sheep that were present to try for the Gyrfalcon that has been reported recently there. It was quite a scene and I estimate that in the time I tried for the bird (4 hours), over 125 birders\/photogs were there for the bird as well. Millions of photographs were taken of the\u00a0local Peregrine Falcons (that might not be an exaggeration). The falcons did not fly much, but did spend much time on the closest perches. Other good birds\u00a0included several Bald Eagles, Common Ravens, and a\u00a0Cooper&#8217;s Hawk which was chased from the far side of the river to the Lookout by the local male Peregrine Falcon. As for the Gyrfalcon, it was of course a no-show.
